I should also mention, Bob Fitrakis of the (Columbus, Ohio) Free Press, who had been working with the Greene county complainants just wrote a column on some of his thoughts concerning the new Antioch

The resurrection of Antioch College: A small victory for humanity

Me? I'm simply disappointed to see the complaint with the AG's office about the university dropped.

Another important thing to note in the midst of all the hoopla over independence is the size of the final agreement: a "750-page closing document."

I'll be interested in finding out whether or not all those dotted "i"s and crossed "t"s actually do contain any "hypothetical ‘devils’" or not.

So many hopes and dreams, even some friendships have been lost over the past 2+ years of this struggle, I can't help but be pessimistic right now. Others have said it's a done deal already and the Friday event is just ceremony, and I hope that's true but I keep worrying there's some t that forgot to be crossed and there will be more delays etc.

And I totally agree with you, until we can all see the 'Final Agreement' I'm gonna worry and fret about those hypothetical 'devils'.

I too want to be wrong, cause I really want to get on board but after what happened to Nonstop I'm pretty disheartened and most, if not all, of my optimism is gone right now.

I'm so ready for this part of this to be over.

But hang in there, it can't get any worse, right? :) {knock on wood}

Gays, lesbians rally in Fort Worth over bar raid

The statement also said that “an extremely intoxicated patron made sexually explicit movements toward the police supervisor” and that person was arrested for public intoxication.

A second “intoxicated individual” was arrested for public intoxication after making “sexually explicit movements towards another officer,” and a third person assaulted a TABC agent by grabbing his groin. That man was escorted outside and arrested for public intoxication, but was released to paramedics because of his “extreme intoxication” and the fact that he was vomiting repeatedly.

The statement said that while some officers were outside dealing with the vomiting suspect, another officer inside requested assistance in handling an intoxicated patron who was resisting arrest, and that this person was “placed on the ground to control and apprehend him.”

This person was apparently Chad Gibson, who was knocked unconscious and is now hospitalized with a brain injury.

Eyewitnesses to that incident said Gibson, who is “maybe 160 pounds soaking wet,” did not resist arrest but that he did stumble after the first officer grabbed his arm.

Rainbow Lounge owner J.R. Schrock said claims that patrons made sexual advances to the officers and that one patron groped an officer were lies.

“The groping of the police officer — really? We’re gay, but we’re not dumb,” Schrock said to the crowd that gathered at the bar Sunday afternoon. “That is a lie, and I am appalled by it.

“They treat us like outcasts. But even outcasts have a time to shine, and this is it,” Schrock said, pledging that he would not be “scared away” or intimidated into closing his bar.

quote:
"Had a ‘good faith’ effort gone into saving the College, at bare minimum alumni would have been contacted PRIOR to the public announcement of the College’s impending closure back in 2007. Instead, alumni were left to learn of the impending demise of our college from media reports. There was no final effort to contact us about any kind of an emergency appeal, as the decision had already been made."

this applied not only to alumni but to current students as well. I was one of the many who learned from media reports that the school we had been attending and the campus that was our home would be shuttered indefinitely...

this surprised me not in the least, as it was already widely recognized that the University had a vested interest in killing the college. It is extremely disappointing to me personally that we did not take more radical action in preventing this- following the formal channels of recourse seemed a fruitless plan of action as the University itself was quite obviously not interested in restricting its efforts to close the college to legal methods...

Thanks for the encouragement folks.

I'm slowly but surely working on sort of a part III of these Antioch posts. It should be up here in a bit.

In the mean time, it's good to see the issues at the core of these posts getting some real consideration.

Thanks to both of you.

Mainly, I'm surprised it hasn't been said more often.

Art- as I said in the piece, I don't think 'building forward' needs to be the ONLY focus here.

I see it more as dual tracked- build an independent- distinct from the University in every way- institution to carry forward the core of what Antioch College was. Particular focus in creating such has to be on reincorporating those who were displaced and directly affected by the closure of the college- and yes, this means former College staff as well. The union busting was a critical component of all of this.

But the second track has to be a full and independent exploration leading to an accounting of what happened. Back last June I was calling for "INDEPENDENT forensics" on the finances and the process.

We still don't have that.

Supporting those who have standing, in their efforts to make there be legal consequences for what the University did seems an equally important endevour- and quite possibly the only way we're ever going to get hard evidence of how this happened.

I don't view the murder of our college as something to just 'let slide' and build forward the next.

We need to understand why this happened, how it happened, and WHO made it happen. It's becoming clearer and clearer that this was a focused intentional process.

We need to fully understand why those who acted the way they did did what they did- and what they stood to gain by doing so- be that monetarily or ideologically. (Yes, people can 'gain' in ways other than 'mere' money.)

Unfortunately other than supporting those who have legal recourse, we are left with few other means by which to make there be consequences for those who murdered Antioch College.
